NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:11] Hello and welcome to the London Tech Show by CloserStill Media. I am Nayoka Oware hosting for Disruptive Live. And today, I’m joined by Matthew Bailey, the National Sales Director of Blue Chip. Matthew, welcome.
MATTHEW BAILEY [00:00:22] Thank you.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:23] Matthew tell us a bit more about your job role and what Blue Chip does.
MATTHEW BAILEY [00:00:27] Yes, so I’m the National Sales Director at Blue Chip, I’ve been there for 19 years. All my sales career and Blue Chip are an IT managed services company specializing in cloud services, cloud for production, cloud disaster recovery and hardware maintenance services.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:44] Thank you for sharing that. What are the results that the company has seen over the last year? Like any positive results, any growth?
MATTHEW BAILEY [00:00:52] Yeah so Blue Chip’s had a fantastic year. We closed our year at the end of September. We had our cloud managed service businesses was up 8 percent in terms of revenue and our hardware maintenance business was up 16 percent. So it was a really good year for Blue Chip, fantastic organic growth that we’ve seen from our customers. So thank you very much to them.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:01:11] Wonderful. You mentioned organic growth and it makes me think green. So how are you helping your customers with your green programme?
MATTHEW BAILEY [00:01:17] Yeah. So Blue Chip is really committed to our environment and how our customers are going to impact upon the environment. Owning a data centre naturally uses an awful lot of power, which we use a lot a lot of carbon to create that. So what we’ve what we’ve made a commitment for is planting 700000 trees in the forest of Masten Vale. We’ve currently already planted 350000 of those trees with our customers. So one of the beauties about working with Blue Chip is if you put your infrastructure in our data centre and as part of our cloud service, we will provide you with a certificate to certified that your I.T. is actually has a green supply chain and that you’ve planted so many thousand trees to offset that. So it’s for us, it’s a real proud moment of that. Other areas where we’re going green as a company, you know, we’ve gone down the electric car route and something like 30 percent of our company car fleet is now fully electric. So, yeah, it was interesting when a guy from VW came over the other day. We’ve got more charging points than their head office in Milton Keynes. It was quite an interesting play and that’s all because we believe we need to put the right things back into the environment.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:27] That’s really great to hear. Thank you for sharing that, Matthew. Are you finding that there is a skill shortage on the IBM power operating systems?
MATTHEW BAILEY [00:02:35] So, yeah, in regards to a skill shortage the general marketplace is not really recruiting individuals out of universities or schools on those operating systems. One of the things we’re particularly proud of is our apprentice programme. For the last 15 years we’ve been running an apprentice program on these. So from hardware engineers to IBM i, AEX and IBM mainframe technicians, and we’ve been continuing to bring these people on through our business for that period. So we’ve got many of them that have now worked their way up to third level consultants. And it’s a continuous program. So last year we employed nine additional apprentices. So for us, it’s quite a quite, quite good production line of bringing these resources in. And it enables us to have the critical mass to support our customers. And we’re always on the lookout for for an experienced IBM i or AIX technician or consultant in the marketplace to bolster the team. But we also grow those from from internally. And that really, really helps us provide our customers with remote manage services on those platforms where they can’t get the right resource in their area or they can only get, you know, a single person. And then they’ve got that business risk of what if that person was to go off sick or to to take an elongated absence from the business. And we’re finding that there’s a number of customers that are bringing us those opportunities because of our critical mass.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:03:59] Thank you for that. Are there any projects that you’re currently working on that you can tell us about?
MATTHEW BAILEY [00:04:03] Yeah. So there’s, I can’t mention names, obviously Nayoka, sorry. But there’s there’s a couple of key projects that we’re working on at the moment, ones for a car automotive supplier. And we’re currently migrating their SAP environments from South America and from Germany into the UK. One of those is as an IBM power based SAP environment. And the second is an X86 SAP environment migration. And that’s due to be going live in the summer of this year. So watch out for a bit more news on that. And a second one that I’d like to talk to that that goes live over the Easter weekend is is a banking institution. And we’re currently migrating them from an on premise solution to a to our Blue Chip infrastructure as a service cloud platform. So, yeah, both those projects being worked on hard by the teams at the moment and both the Blue Chip team and the customer teams are doing a fantastic job of bringing that business onboard and generally just fixing those customers IT issues and taking away their pain whilst delivering good quality. And of course, with all of the green credentials I spoke about earlier.
