Martin Atkinson – FORCAM – Cloud Expo Europe 2020

NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:14] Hello and welcome to day two of the London Tech Show by CloserStill Media right here at Excel London. I am Nayoka Oware hosting for Disruptive Live. And today I’m joined by Martin Atkinson, who is the Director of FORCAM UK. Welcome, Martin. How are you doing?

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:00:29] I’m very good. Thank you. And it’s my pleasure to be here today.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:33] Wonderful. How are you enjoying the event so far?

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:00:37] The event has been very interesting. We’ve had some good footfall. We’ve had plenty of interest in understanding how FORCAM and our technology can support manufacturers on their digital transformation journey.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:53] Martin, who are FORCAM and what do you do?

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:00:56] So FORCAM is a a technology company. We are headquartered in Germany. We bring to market a smart industrial Internet of Things platform called FORCAM FORCE and we use FORCAM FORCE to support our customers as they undertake a digital transformation process within their organisation.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:01:26] Thank you for that. Can you tell us about your smart IIoT platform?

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:01:31] So the FORCAM FORCE platform is smart for three reasons. The first reason is that we have machine plugins that connect to machine controllers on the factory floor. I think it’s fair to say that the industrial Internet of Things has the potential to revolutionise manufacturing. That said, manufacturers are at the very early stages of understanding how to adopt the industrial Internet of Things. It’s important to understand that machines do not work in isolation. They work within an end to end manufacturing process with inputs and outputs. And so how to manage those assets within the industrial Internet of Things, it’s still in its infancy. The second component that would make the FORCAM FORCE platform smart is that we serve up data that has business and operational context around the aspects that are important for manufacturing. So cost quality throughput. Availability and waste. In addition to this, the third component would be that we use our bridge API, a programming interface to serve that data to other applications within the business. So applications such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, self-learning and advanced analytics. So in a nutshell, that’s what makes the FORCAM FORCE platform smart.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:03:19] Thank you for that, Marfin. Can you share how your industrial approach to the Internet of Things can deliver increased profitability for manufacturers?

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:03:29] So our experience with manufacturers would indicate that technology is not the silver bullet. So if you’re a manufacturer and you believe that digital transformation can be achieved by technology alone, then I’m afraid you’re asking the wrong question. Digital transformation. It’s complex. It’s not easy. It’s important that as a manufacturer, you do not boil the ocean or you eat the elephant in one bite. So digital transformation really is about being business programmes and behaviours led where technology is the enabler.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:04:18] Thank you so much. And lastly, what has been your highlight of the event so far?

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:04:25] The highlight of the event would be the genuine interest shown by visitors to the event. And the spirit of collaboration that exists between all exhibitors that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with at the event.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:04:52] Thank you so much for your time, Martin. It’s been great speaking to you.

MARTIN ATKINSON [00:04:55] Thank you very much.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:04:57] You can join the conversation by using the hashtag Disruptive Live and hashtag CEE 2020. Thank you for watching.
