NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:14] Hello and welcome back to day one of Technology for Marketing at Olympia. My name is Nayoka Oware and I am right here with an amazing guest, his name is Joshua Halpern and he is the founder of The Getting to Global Initiative how are you doing Joshau?

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:00:31] I am good, thanks for having me. How are you?

NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:32] I’m great, I’m great. Are you loving the event so far?

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:00:35] Yeah, it’s crowded. It’s a lot of people, a lot of energy. It’s good. Yeah.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:39] Wonderful, so let’s talk more about your background, you are the founder of The Getting to Global Initiative tell us more about the company, how you founded it.

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:00:50] Sure, sure, we’re a public private partnership, so we have we. So we’re not a company per say, where we we. We organized a company, an initiative based on my work as a U.S. diplomat. So I was serving as a U.S. diplomat in China for about five years at the U.S. embassy, helping US companies enter the China market. But a lot of my works towards the latter part of my my mission there was on e-commerce working with Ali Baba, Jin Dong, Amazon when they’re in there. And so I was asked under the former administration, the Obama administration, to come back and launch something called an e-commerce innovation lab to help companies expand globally through e-commerce channels, not just to China. As we started to get things moving, we started to partner with a lot of private industry organizations that would talk about payments, logistics, marketing, all the different aspects of global e-commerce. But one of the biggest challenges was how as a government entity, we can play a role. So we started to look at ways that we could merge the private industry and government organizations and support to build an initiative. And we got funding from Facebook and Google and eBay and Pitney Bowes and USPS and we decided to launch an initiative. So I resigned from the diplomatic core and Lifelong Security for a life of public private partnership initiative.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:04] You have mentioned the names of some pretty big brands, so you got funding from them?

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:02:10] Yes.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:11] That must have not been easy.

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:02:12] No. I thought it was hard to get funding from government but it’s actually it’s hard to get funding from some of these companies. And as my wife will attest to, it’s a longer time horizon than you’d think. To get money from some of these organizations. And they have they have varying even within their organizations, varying , you know, pain points that they want to focus on. Some of them just want to show that they’re helping small and medium businesses.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:35] Absolutely.

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:02:36] But some of them want to make money on advertising or whatever services. We try to have our foot in between giving the best solution for small or medium business, but also supporting our sponsors. But I think any sponsor that comes to the table knows that when they look at me and look at me in the eye and they said, you know, they know they’re not gonna be able to ask me to promote something that doesn’t make sense for a business. And I think that’s the integrity that we have as an organization.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:03:03] Thank you for that. A question that I have for you, is can small and medium businesses expand globally, is that really possible?

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:03:08] Yeah, it’s a great question I get asked that often. I think that that the convergence of cross-border demand. You’re seeing upwards of eighty two percent of all shoppers by at least one thing from another market. Forty six percent don’t care where they’re buying things from. There’s a huge, huge pent up demand for products from other markets. Matching that with scalable solutions that we see everywhere here today in digital marketing and access to direct fulfilment solutions in duty and tax calculations. They’re scalable solutions today that were never available before. And that makes it a perfect time for small and medium businesses to cut through the noise and sell globally.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:03:53] Okay. How are you working with the government trade entities to build?

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:03:57] Great question. We just actually closed the contract with. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:04:03] I knew you were hesitant about saying, I could see it in your eyes.

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:04:05] With with one of the leading trade government entities in Europe. So we’ll be building an export accelerator for them to help their small and medium companies figure out which markets to go into and how to go global. We’re doing some work with Canada. We do work with the state of California. So we we approach them and we say, look, we are free solution for small and medium businesses. You go to Getting to Global dot org and there’s a free duty tax calculator, free H.S. code, normalizer. Find the right experts on our platform. And the government loves it because we provide the reports and we tell, look, this is what we’ve ultimately done. The sponsors like you because it’s access, but it’s authentic access with the trust container of our public private partner. And this SME’s are really happy because they are getting access to services that are usually enterprise level and enterprise are priced out of a lot of what small medium business can afford.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:04:55] Wonderful. Do you have any final words, anything else that you would like to add?

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:04:59] You know, I think it’s it’s a tough world out there today with in retail. There are some marketplaces that we know that start with A that are huge and taking up a lot of the space. But there’s always room for someone who has an authentic story, a real product and and can deliver that information and the the product in a quick and easy way.

NAYOKA OWARE [00:05:19] And if they feel discouraged about starting up their own company.

JOSHUA HALPERN [00:05:22] Call me, go to Getting to Global dot org. There’s a lot of stories. I interview a lot of brands who have started from nothing on our website, on YouTube and Getting to Global. And we can tell you the stories. I mean, I think the biggest inspiration is talking to people, other brands who’ve done it. So, yeah.
