Scott Eivers – Nordcloud – Cloud Expo Europe 2020
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:10] Hello and welcome back to day two of the London Tech Show brought to you by CloserStill Media right here at Excel London, I’m Nayoka Oware hosting for Disruptive Live. And today I’m joined by Scott Eivers, who is the Chief Growth Officer for Nordcloud. How you doing?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:00:27] Very well. Thanks for letting me be here with you.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:30] You’re absolutely welcome. Thank you for joining me. Let’s find out some more about what your job role entails.
SCOTT EIVERS [00:00:35] Great. So, yeah, the chief growth officer at Nordcloud is basically the sales lead for the UK, but I also look after marketing and product for the group. So basically building the next generation of exciting value propositions for the market from Nordcloud.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:47] Amazing. Who are Nordcloud and what do you do?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:00:50] So cloud native business about nine years old. We basically help customers migrate to the cloud, whether they’re with Amazon or AWS. Azure and GCP, we help them through the full transformation. So everything from professional services, training, managed services were a 450 person business, highly certified and very dedicated to the cloud. So cloud enthusiasts you call us.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:01:12] That’s wonderful to hear. You’ve just moved from Gartner as a Senior Partner to Nordcloud. Can you tell us why you made this move?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:01:21] Yeah. So obviously I’ve been a Gartner for about five years and I wanted to work with a tech business that was really practical, very hands on with really great clients and a really great culture. And when I worked with Nordcloud, I just found that these guys were winners in the market. They really have the right thing and their clients love them. So this is the sort of place I wanted to be for the next step of my career.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:01:40] That’s great to hear. With your extensive knowledge of the industry, what’s the biggest mistake people make when considering cloud?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:01:48] Yeah. So I think the biggest thing is that they don’t really consider the people angle. So cloud transformation is at one level it’s a platform, but actually in reality it’s a lot about individual change. You have to unfreeze somebody from the way they’ve already done things, move them and then refreeze them to something else. And a lot of that’s about training is about enablement. It’s about coaching on the ground. And I think it’s often missed with cloud transformations, that softer aspect. And I think it’s really important to include that in the plan that you build.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:18] How difficult is it to get people to change? Have you had many clients that are resistant to it?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:02:23] I’d say so, yeah. There tends to be, let’s say, especially if you’ve got a lot of traditional invested in the history of the company, you have to really help people elevate themselves, be exposed to new ways of working, possibly even move their incentives so that they become more rewarded for the new way of working as well. Celebrate success. I think most organizations can get there. It’s that really doing the right thing rather than just assuming. I think you can’t assume you have to really help people move on that journey.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:52] I agree with you there, celebrating success is one of my favourites.
SCOTT EIVERS [00:02:54] Great, great.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:02:56] Why have AWS, Azure and GCP chosen Nordcloud for the highest level of partnership?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:03:02] I think it’s because we’re really practical. So as a cloud native business, we talk about cloud, but we really do cloud. So of the 500 people in Nordcloud, 450 are really practical certified solution architects and we do a lot of good work at migrating and we drive a lot of consumption of cloud because clients like us and they go on the journey with us. So I think they’ve they’ve rewarded us thankfully with the top certifications and we’re grateful for for their help.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:03:30] How long ago did you move to Nordcloud because you know an awful lot about the company so you must have been there for some time.
SCOTT EIVERS [00:03:35] I’d say just near shy of three months. So, yeah, I’m quite active with customers travel a lot around Europe, you know, and I’ve really got involved in the culture. Yeah, it’s been great. We really had fun and I just think I’m now immersed in it. I can I can say that I’m real Nordcloudian now. I think so. Yeah.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:03:53] Congratulations to you on the move. Can you tell me one truly unique fact about Nordcloud?
SCOTT EIVERS [00:03:59] So something I really liked and it was part of the what attracted me to Nordcloud is that they take a lot of training of new joiners very seriously. So we’re one of the certified training partners for these players. And if you’ve just joined, we have something called the TAP program, which is a talent acceleration program, and we help people with six months worth of hands-on coaching to become a cloud architect. And I think that’s a lot of investment in people. I think it’s attracted a really great pool of talent. It’s what’s fuelled a lot of the future of Nordcloud. And I think it’s it’s a real it’s it’s got a real community about it. There’s a lot of you go to the Nordcloud website. You can see the pages as they do a lot of meetups. And I just think it brings that sort of cloud native feeling into the business. You know, a young, fresh feel as well. So I really like that. I think that’s a learning that I hadn’t seen in other companies that I’ve worked with or for. I think these guys do this really well. And I’m hoping that we can bring a lot more, we call them tap people, but more, you know, of those hires into our business and really accelerate that even further.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:05:01] Wonderful. I think that’s a really good idea. Investing in your employees, you know, taking the time out, time out to train them and encourage them, it helps the business grow.
SCOTT EIVERS [00:05:09] Absolutely, yeah. And they become advocates for us and, you know, hopefully they stay at Nordcloud for a long period, but even if they don’t, they they go to the market, they they help fuel that sort of next generation of people in the market. So I think that’s that’s great. And then they support our brand and they they help us become more known. So that’s really good yeah.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:05:26] That’s a great mindset to have.
SCOTT EIVERS [00:05:27] Yeah thank you.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:05:28] Thank you so much for joining me today.
SCOTT EIVERS [00:05:30] Thank you for having me. That’s great. All the best.
