NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:11] Hello and welcome to day two of the London Tech Show 2020 by CloserStill Media right here at Excel London. I’m Nayoka Oware hosting for Disruptive Live. And today I’m joined by Harold Buter, who is the Sales Engineer at Rubrik. Harold, welcome.
HAROLD BUTER [00:00:27] Thank you very much.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:28] You’re welcome. How are you finding the event so far?
HAROLD BUTER [00:00:31] I’m finding it a bit quiet today, of course, but it’s a it’s a good event for us. Absolutely. Yes.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:36] Tell us more about what your job role entails.
HAROLD BUTER [00:00:39] Yes so I’m a sales engineer of Rubik, which means I do pre-sales. I consult with customers. I visit them and actually help them actually architecting a Rubrik solution for them.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:00:49] Wonderful. What do Rubrik do, who are they?
HAROLD BUTER [00:00:53] So Rubrik is a company that’s six years old. And they started out with data protection, mainly with data protection in local data centres or with VMware and taking that VM piece into the cloud into AWS. From that point we actually evolved. So we don’t only do VMware anymore, we do secure database, Oracle databases and all that. And we have multiple cloud solutions whereby we actually connect to Azure to AWS to Google, GCP, stuff like that. And the next part of the story is with Rubrik was actually just to transform how back-up works. And we simplified a backup, but also use that data for other purposes. So we actually start to extract the meta data for from the backup side of things to actually think about, OK, how can we help in terms of like the ransomware side of things in data classification. So that’s in a very short, brief what we can do.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:01:47] Thank you for that, Harold. How can you help companies remediate from ransomeware?
HAROLD BUTER [00:01:52] That is a good question, so the way we actually work with with against the ransomware side of things and a lot of companies do have upfront protection for ransomware, but obviously ransomware still trickle through into the backend. Now, when you think about protecting against ransomware, you have to actually start from the ground off, which which we did did Rubrik. So what we start to do is actually create a new system whereby we started the file system for the from the ground off, make it immutable. So even if data comes into our own systems, it is immutable. So ransomware has no chance actually to to change any data, to change the backups whatsoever. From that point on, we started to think about, okay, how can we help detecting the ransomware? Because ransomware is comes into different methods and whether that’s by phishing emails, whether that’s by hand-sewn integration or reconnaissance by by by hackers, that kind of stuff. So how can we help? So we created a system which you see in our Rubrik Polaris, which is a software as a service that we provide for our Rubrik customers. And one of the parts of that is actually radar. So what radar does is actually starting to detect anomalies between the different backups. Okay. So what that means is we can actually if if we take an example, for instance, we have to we we see a file server, we can see every day about a hundred change or a thousand changes. And then on day X, Y, Z, we see suddenly 10000 changes. We can then alert actually the system administrator or the CISO administrator and say, guys, something is not right here. What that means for the organisation is, they can actually start to investigate this. Now, in the old way, doing things, what people tend to do is is finding it very difficult to actually do to find out what has been changed by the ransomware, what it means is they actually have to recover all data, which means a bigger data loss. The way Rubrik does with the investigation of a snapshot, we can show you exactly what’s actually been changed. And within two clicks, you can recover exactly that back for me, whether it’s the cloud or whether you got the on premise appliances.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:04:04] Thank you for that. Tell us about the products Rubrik offers.
HAROLD BUTER [00:04:08] So Rubrik has two kind of products basically, and they tie in very, very tight together. So first of all, we have Rubrik Cloud Data Management, which is CDM. That’s a appliance that we installed on premise whereby we protect local VMware fiscal servers, AEX and all on all that usual stuff basically. We store the data for X amount of time on that on the appliance. And then we can archive data off into the cloud and that could be AWS, Azure, stuff like that, especially with Azure. We tend to have a very good relation that we can actually use smart tearing, which means be more cost effective for organisations basically. The second part of the other products, it is actually basic Polaris. So Polaris I mentioned it earlier is a software as a service that sits on top of it and we provide different apps within Polaris. The first app is GPS which is which all Rubrik customers get by default basically to actually monitor all the Rubrik clusters around the world. So if you have multiple clusters you can monitor altogether. Radar is the anomaly detection that I just mentioned earlier in the interview. And the third bit that we do is data classification. And that’s a very interesting piece as well. We actually get very much traction on it. And what it does is that we can actually from the meta data, we can actually see what data is where. But it does it’s supposed to be there. So if you have for instance a healthcare organisation that has patient data and the data sits on an server, that’s not on the white list. We can actually alert you on that and actually tell the CISO, we found data that’s not compliant, that’s not sitting in in the right organisation or the right folders.
NAYOKA OWARE [00:05:48] Great. Right. Let’s move on to social media. We know it’s a great tool you can use it to promote your company. You can use it to engage with clients, customers. How do you like to use social media? You mentioned that you primarily use Twitter.
HAROLD BUTER [00:06:01] Yeah. Yeah. I love social media. I use it a lot. I’m on Twitter and on LinkedIn. So personally, I use a lot just to everyday messages just to get out there what we do. With Rubrik, we actually quite open and honest what we do. So we tell our customers what we do. And of course, showing a bit what what what products we do in terms of DevOps, in terms of what the products are, what’s coming on the market side of things and how we can elaborate on that. We have a really good marketing team out there. I have a feeling one of the best I’ve ever worked with in the industry. They they send us out quite often the messages is what we can actually do. And you can choose as an employee what kind of messages. Maybe some even more technical like myself and some of the technical message. Or you have salespeople that can do more sales, kind of messaging.
